A brief introduction to Viking Britain

For many of us, the word "Viking" conjures up images of brutal bandits crossing the sea in the dark centuries before the "Norman Conquest" of 1066, looting and pillaging the British coast. It's true that Britain during the Viking age was turbulent and violent. Many Kings and military lords sought to make their mark in the annals of history, and their names alone stirred the blood and imagination: Swain the Moustache, Edmund the Brave, Ivar the Boneless, Alfred the Great, Eric the Bloodaxe, Edgar the Pacifying, and so on. Evidence of the cruelty, the tyranny, the greed, the arrogance, and the perseverance and wisdom of these men is still being dug up from time to time from the soil of Britain.

But that's not all.

Thomas Williams is the curator of Vikings: Lives and Legends at the British Museum. Drawing on his experience as a curator, he tells the story of the people we call the Vikings who came to Britain not only to raid and loot, but also to settle, colonise and rule. The Vikings' influence on the islands was deep and lasting, shaping the social, cultural and political development of Britain for hundreds of years. Indeed, the presence of Scandinavian immigrants can still be felt in British language, literature, place names and folklore, and their distant memories are remembered through J.R.R. Filtered and reproduced by writers such as Tolkien, William Morris and G.K. Chesterton, they transformed the Western imagination.

Using new scholarship and years of research, this unconventional book digs deep into what the Vikings and their contemporaries left behind in the British Isles, the mountains and terrain they traveled, including Rune tablets and ship burials, settlements and battlefields, poetry and Chronicles, filling in a long missing link in history. Through this book, readers will rediscover that forgotten world, its impact on British history and its implications for the world today.
