Guardians of the Byzantine Revival
The Byzantine Emperor Romanus I has been largely overlooked by scholars, but his rule played a key role in a period when the empire was under pressure.
Romanus I was born a peasant and rose to the rank of marshal, usurping the throne when Constantine VII was a child. During the period of his reign, Romanus I held the capital, resisted the repeated attacks of the Bulgarian Empire, and patiently waited for the death of the Bulgarian monarch Simeon. Moreover, he promoted the brave general Curcuas, who captured several towns, surrounded Edessa, and forced the city to surrender its icon, turning the imperial defense on the eastern frontier. At home, Romanus did not confront the church's hardline patriarch Nicholas, but patiently waited for his old age to die, resolving the constraints of the church. In addition, he legislated to restrict the annexation of land, intending to limit the expansion of feudal large families.
As a usurper, Romanus did not murder Constantine VII, but married his daughter to him. When Romanus I was old and ill, he repeatedly repented and ordered Constantine VII to be named as his first successor. Under Romanus, the Byzantine Empire survived the Bulgarian crisis and maintained its revival, effectively protecting the empire for Constantine VII.
