A brief introduction to the Last Drink

The Last Drink: The Making and Ending of Prohibition in America is by DanielOkrent, a veteran media personality, Pulitzer Prize-nominated nonfiction writer and former public editor of The New York Times. The Last Drink is his magnum opus, an annual selection of several publications, and one of the most important and popular works on the history of Prohibition in the United States. The Prohibition period is a "strange" period in the history of the United States and even the history of the world, from the 18th Amendment to the Constitution in 1920 (Prohibition) declared restrictions on the production, transportation, import, export and sale of all alcoholic beverages, to the 21st Amendment to the Constitution in 1933 to abolish prohibition. These fourteen years have had varying degrees of impact on many aspects of American social life. The prohibition issue is also an excellent entry point for a deeper understanding of the political ecology, law and coercion, morality and society in the United States. "The Last Cup" can be described as an "epic" level of work, divided into four parts, a total of 21 chapters. Over the course of a decade, Okrente has collected and scrutinized numerous archives and historical records detailing the entire process of prohibition in the United States from its establishment to its abolition. His characters range from presidents to ordinary people, politicians, businessmen, aristocrats, lobbyists, booggers, writers, priests, judges, policemen, gangsters - hundreds of them. In a witty and poignant way, Okrent shows how disparate political forces came together under the banner of prohibition to miraculously reach a consensus. This unprecedented interference in private life, and what direct or indirect social backlash, for today's American society left a legacy that cannot be ignored. This book provides a window for readers to understand the history of the United States during the Prohibition period, a more complete and comprehensive reflection of the ecology and appearance of the American society at the beginning of the 20th century, and the publication of the Chinese edition can also fill a gap in the field of prohibition.
