The Dangers of Translation

In 1792, the 82-year-old emperor Qianlong, elated after the Qing army defeated the invading Gurke, wrote an article showing his "perfect martial arts". In the middle and late 18th century, China under his rule had a vast territory and a prosperous society, but internal troubles and foreign troubles had already emerged. At the same time, Britain's defeat of France in the Seven Years' War and emergence as a maritime hegemon greatly contributed to the Industrial Revolution, creating a huge demand for raw materials, markets, and wealth. In 1783, after the loss of the thirteen colonies in North America, Britain first further strengthened its control over India and set its sights on the east of the Strait of Malacca.

In the summer of 1793, George Macartney, the British ambassador to the Qing Dynasty, travelled across the ocean and led a delegation to Chengde to meet Emperor Qianlong. This is one of the most famous moments in the history of China's engagement with the West, and it is mainly recounted by the British ambassador's refusal to kneel and the Qianlong's rage, the conflict caused by the Qing Dynasty's self-regard for heaven and its disregard for other cultures, and the continued backwardness of modern China.

The book not only describes the preparation of the mission, personnel selection, sea voyage, reception of Qing officials along the way, formal and informal talks, misunderstandings caused by translation, and what the mission saw and heard, but also turns the lens to the interpreter Li Zibiao and Xiao Stang Dong, so that their life ups and downs are interwoven with the delegation of the mission, showing the mechanism of state-to-state exchanges. The author believes that Macartney's visit to China was the result, rather than the beginning, of close contact between China and Britain. There were many people in the Qing Dynasty who knew a lot about Europe, but the British threat made it dangerous to have this knowledge, and no one was willing to reveal it. The more you know about other countries, the easier it is to be suspicious in your own country, and the voice of reason will be suppressed, and the translation will bear the brunt.

When the Opium War finally broke out, imperialism and a fully antagonistic nationalism dominated the relationship between China and the West, and the world power structure changed, and mutual understanding between cultures became more and more important.
