Introduction to the Biography of Magritte
This is a detailed biography of the Belgian painter Magritte by the British historian and biographer Alex Danchev. ReneMagritte (1898-1967) was the intellectual interlocutor of Foucault and Wittgenstein, and a painter of great interest to designers and advertisers. Danchev is committed to "exploring the artistic imagination with interdisciplinary methods" and has written several biographies of artists, with Magritte being his last work.
Through a wealth of first-hand material, this book restores the long career of Magritte and uncovers the many puzzles of the "modern world's most important purveyor of images". Unlike most biographers who write in a loving manner about their subjects, Danchev tells Magritte's life story in a humorous and slightly ironic tone. At the same time, he analyzes Magritte's representative paintings one by one with a more objective critic's eye, exploring how the artist integrates personal experiences, dreams and reality. He created works of art full of fantastic colors and deep philosophy, revealing Magritte's unique artistic style and philosophical thoughts as a representative figure of surrealism.
About the author
AlexDanchev (1955-2016) is a historian, biographer and professor at the University of St Andrew's. He has written on a wide range of topics, including artist biographies, criticism and military history studies. His representative works include Biography of Georges Braque, Biography of Cezanne, Manifesto of 100 Artists, etc., and he is praised by the Scotsman as one of the most outstanding and versatile historians today.
