When Books Go to War 【 Content Introduction 】
When Adolf Hitler's Nazis burned books in Europe during World War II, outraged American librarians organized the "Victory Books Campaign," which collected 20 million hardcover books and sent them to military institutions at home and abroad. However, the number and variety of books were far from enough to meet the needs of soldiers, and the heavy hardcover books were difficult to carry on the battlefield.
To this end, the American Book Association and the U.S. Army launched an unusual "military edition book" project: to provide small, lightweight special paperback books for U.S. troops in the war. By the end of the Second World War, 1,200 different topics, covering all reading fields, a total of 120 million military books for soldiers to bring valuable spiritual food and a unique reading experience. During the wait for D-Day, in the hellish trenches of the Pacific, in the hospital, in the flying bomber... Soldiers read the Army supply books and sent generous comments to writers, many of whom answered every letter.
The Great Gatsby became a hit, and Betty Smith, author of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, became a national icon... Military books not only helped the United States win the war and turned a group of authors into bestsellers, they also helped spur the paperback revolution in publishing, spreading reading habits from intellectuals to entire nations, creating a new generation of democratic readers and helping to revive the European publishing industry. For history buffs and book lovers, this book is an exciting story about World War II.
