历史上的统治者都用法律来维持秩序，但是法律不仅仅是权力和社会控制的工具，法律还让普通人有了表达个人期待的机会。
牛津大学法律人类学教授费尔南达·皮里追溯了古往今来、存在于世界主要文明的复杂法律体系的兴衰，同时展示了普通人是如何借助法律来定义社区、规范贸易和建设文明的。
皮里认为，真正将人类团结在一起的是我们对法律能够产生正义、对抗压迫、从混乱中创造秩序的信念。

Fernanda Pirri, professor of legal anthropology at the University of Oxford, traces the rise and fall of the complex legal systems that have existed throughout the world's major civilizations, while showing how ordinary people have used the law to define communities, regulate trade, and build civilizations.
What truly unites humanity, Pirri argues, is our belief that law can produce justice, fight oppression, and create order out of chaos.
