More than a million middle-aged Japanese, supposed to be the backbone of the workplace, have unexpectedly dropped out of the workforce and are struggling to survive on their parents' pensions.
It's not just a number, it's the story of a million families. Known as "disappearing workers," they disappear from official statistics but are a real presence in Japanese society. Why is this phenomenon so prominent? What is the deep connection between it and Japan's accelerating aging? What negative impact will this have on Japan's economic development and social stability?
