【作者简介】
伯纳德•克里克生于1929年，曾先后就读于伦敦大学学院、伦敦经济学院、哈佛大学等校。1957－1965年先后任伦敦经济学院政治学助理讲师、讲师、高级讲师，1965－1971年任谢菲尔德大学政治理论与制度教授，1971－1984年任伦敦大学伯克贝克学院政治学与社会学教授。2002年获封爵士,2008年逝于爱丁堡。著有《美国的政治学》（1959）、《为政治辩护》（1962，此后多次再版）、《议会改革》（1964）、《乔治•奥威尔传》（1982）、《社会主义》（1987）、《牛津通识读本：民主》（2002）等。
Democracy 【 Content Introduction 】
No political concept has been used so often, and misused so often, as "democracy." Examining democracy in detail is both challenging and essential. Democracy is discussed in terms of political principles, institutional arrangements, and types of behavior, tracing the history of democracy, covering the revolutions of ancient Greece and Rome, the United States, France, and Russia, and the variations and conditions of democracy in the contemporary world. The author argues that democracy is a necessary but not sufficient condition for good governance, and that the will of the democratic majority must be constrained by ideas such as the rule of law and human rights, as well as the claims and freedoms of other social groups.
【 About the author 】
Bernard Crick was born in 1929 and studied at University College London, the London School of Economics and Harvard University. He was Assistant Lecturer, lecturer and Senior Lecturer in Political Science at the London School of Economics from 1957 to 1965, Professor of Political Theory and Institutions at the University of Sheffield from 1965 to 1971 and Professor of Political Science and Sociology at Birkbeck College, University of London from 1971 to 1984. He was knighted in 2002 and died in Edinburgh in 2008. He is the author of Politics in America (1959), In Defense of Politics (1962, reprinted many times since then), Parliamentary Reform (1964), A Biography of George Orwell (1982), Socialism (1987), and The Oxford Reader: Democracy (2002).
