Introduction to the Biography of Levi-Strauss

In this award-winning biography, historian Emmanuel Loyer tells the story of Claude Levi-Strauss, a true intellectual adventurer, one of France's greatest anthropologists of the 20th century. The four major periods of Levi-Strauss 'life provide us with a new perspective on the structuralist master's work and life.

1908-1935: His childhood in an assimilated Jewish family, his hopeful school days and his first forays into political and intellectual movements.

1935-1947: As a young professor, he left Paris in 1935 to teach sociology in Sao Paulo. His meandering expeditions into the Brazilian hinterland, where he discovered Amerindians as others, led him to become an anthropologist. From 1941 he began a new academic career in New York.

1947-1971: After World War II, he returned to France and began the period of his greatest work. Over decades of intense work, he reshaped anthropology, establishing it as a discipline that offered an entirely new worldview. In 1955, The book Tropical Blues provided incontrovertible proof to the world. In those years, he became a national monument to France and an intellectual celebrity of global renoir.

1971-2009: He insists that this century is irrelevant to him, but, paradoxically, this distance allows him to articulate modernity in an incredibly sharp and rebellious style.

While many of us are used to seeing pictures of an aging Levi-Strauss, or of him as a scruffy-looking, culture-shocked figure in the Amazon, this book shows us a young, sophisticated, charismatic, and handsome Levi-Strauss. Rather than portraying Levi-Strauss as a modern man, she portrays him as a great and restless contemporary.

Emmanuel Eloyer is professor of contemporary history at the Institut d 'Histoire de Sciences Po, where his research interests include French cultural history, intellectual history and cultural exchange.
