Man and the Sacred is the work of the anthropologist Roger Cayowa, who studied the question of the sacred from the 1930s to the 1960s. Holiness does not exist only in religion, war, games, festivals, sex, extravagance... Revelation is a social behavior initiated by human beings for the pursuit of divine experience, and religion is only one of the forms of divine expression. Sacredness is a uniquely human emotion that is both a fundamental need for individual existence and an essential part of society, regardless of race, culture or belief: ancestors worshipped nature, subjects worshipped saints and monarchs, and the modern world regards sovereignty and war as sacred... This work follows the pioneering research of the French sociological school, especially Durkheim and Moss, while synthesizing a large number of social anthropological achievements in the Anglo-American and German-speaking world, and finally extends the author's own original view on the sacred - festival theory. The arguments cover social phenomena and anthropological examples in almost all regions of the world, including the indigenous cultures and customs of the Americas, Africa and Oceania, as well as the myths, legends, customs and literary accounts of Eurasian civilization. About the author
Roger Cayowa (1913-1978) was a French 20th century philosopher, anthropologist, and expert in archaeology and cultural heritage conservation. He co-founded the Sociological Society with Georges Bataille, focusing on the question of sanctity in secular society. He was elected a member of the CollegedeFrance in 1972. His representative works include "Game and Man", "Man and the Sacred", etc. His representative theory is "game classification theory".
