The Doctor Who Deceived the World
This book records the whole process of the "father of the anti-vaccine movement" British doctor Andrew Wakefield's scientific research fraud against the MMR vaccine, which triggered a global crisis of confidence in vaccines. In 1998, Wakefield published a paper in The Lancet, based on a study of 12 children, suggesting a link between the measles virus in the MMR vaccine and autism. The paper had an explosive impact and a series of scientific controversies, triggering a sharp drop in global MMR vaccination rates and a resurgence of measles infections. In 2003, an extensive investigation by Brian Dear, a reporter for The Sunday Times, uncovered the extraordinary deception behind the paper, exposing a secret deal between Wakefield and his profiting associate, lawyer Richard Barr. The paper was eventually retracted by The Lancet, and Wakefield's medical license was revoked. But with the rise of social media in the Internet age, Wakefield reinvented himself, and Diehl continues to track him.
About the author
BrianDeer is a British investigative journalist, best known for his work investigating the pharmaceutical industry, medicine and social issues for the Sunday Times of London. He has been nominated for the BritishPress Awards three times, won the Specialist Journalist of the Year award twice, and was shortlisted for Journalist of the Year. He has lived in New York, San Francisco and Atlanta, and is currently based in London.
