Marxist historian and political scientist. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1962 with a bachelor's degree in Slavic languages, and later entered the political science department of the University of California, Los Angeles, where he received his doctorate in 1972. He taught political science at York University from 1967 to 1996 and was elected to the Royal College of Canada for his outstanding academic contributions. He is the author of the Origins of Capitalism, Democracy Against Capitalism, The New Socialism, and the Social History of Western Political Thought.
