　　作者简介

　　钱歌川（1903—1990），原名慕祖，笔名歌川、味橄等。湖南湘潭人。著名的散文家、翻译家、英语学者。1920年赴日留学。1930年进上海中华书局做编辑，曾参与创办《新中华》杂志，并担任《中华英语半月刊》主编,在此期间，将大量精力放在英语读物的翻译、编写、出版方面。1936年入英国伦敦大学研究英美语言文学。1939年回国后，先后在武汉大学、东吴大学等处任教。曾与鲁迅、茅盾、田汉、郭沫若、郁达夫等文化名人交往，参与文化运动。1947年春，前往台北创办台湾大学文学院并任院长。20世纪60年代赴新加坡，先后任义安学院、新加坡大学和南洋大学中文系教授。1972年底，以70岁高龄退出讲台，后移居美国纽约。

　　钱歌川一生发表了大量散文与英语教学资料，包括《翻译的基本知识》《翻译的技巧》《英文疑难详解》《英文疑难详解续篇》《英文语法作文大全》《论翻译》《简易英文文法》《简易英文动词》《美国日用英语》《英语造句例解》等，影响深远。

Basic Knowledge of Translation

This book explains the basic knowledge of translation, with both a high-altitude theoretical discussion and detailed practical guidance. It is short and simple. Since its publication in the 1970s, it has been widely circulated in the Chinese-speaking world.

The first half of the book, which consists of 18 chapters, introduces the history, linguistic basis, rules and standards of translation. It is like a knowledge essay, even if you do not know a foreign language, it will be interesting to read. The second half teaches the specific steps of translation, citing the excellent European and American writers and Chinese classical works as examples, from simple to deep, correct the deviation. In the appendix, a large number of mistranlations are listed to comment on the mistranlations, so that readers can learn practical skills.

Readers can understand the charm of translation through this book, master the basic knowledge of translation, and improve the ability of translation.

About the author

Qian Gechuan (1903-1990), original name Mu Zu, pseudonym Gechuan, Wei Wei, etc. People from Xiangtan, Hunan. He is a famous essayist, translator and English scholar. He went to Japan to study in 1920. In 1930, he joined the Shanghai Zhonghua Book Company as an editor. He participated in the founding of New China magazine and served as the chief editor of Chinese English Bimonthly. During this period, he devoted much attention to the translation, compilation and publication of English reading materials. In 1936, he entered the University of London to study English and American language and literature. After returning to China in 1939, he successively taught at Wuhan University and Soochow University. He had contacts with Lu Xun, MAO Dun, Tian Han, Guo Moruo, Yu Dafu and other cultural celebrities, and participated in cultural movements. In the spring of 1947, he went to Taipei to establish the College of Arts of Taiwan University and became the dean. In the 1960s, he went to Singapore and successively served as a professor in the Chinese Department of Ngee Ann College, the University of Singapore and Nanyang University. At the end of 1972, at the age of 70, he retired from the podium and moved to New York.
