Description of Petrarch's War:
In the middle of the 14th century, the Black Death enveloped Florence at the same time as another disaster, Petrarch's War. Because his best friend was robbed and beaten by the powerful Ubaldini family, the famous Italian humanist Petrarch wrote to the consul of Florence, calling on the city to declare war on this prominent family.
This is a new microhistory of Florence's war against the Ubaldini family. Linking the war with the plague narrative, the author reexamines Florentine mercenaries, civil servants, and political and economic institutions through a detailed interpretation of the economic data in the archives, especially the salary data of soldiers, in an attempt to reveal the impact of the plague and the war.
Integrating economic, military, literary, and social history into an examination of Florentine society after the plague, this book explores an analytical narrative, an original study that combines military history, economic history, and literary analysis.
About the author
WilliamCaferro is a professor of history at Vanderbilt University who specializes in medieval European history, especially Italian history, and was awarded the Guggenheim Prize in 2010. His works include The Mercenary Company and the Fall of Sienna, The Spinelli Family of Florence: The Fortunes of the Merchant Families of the Renaissance, John Hawkwood: English Mercenaries in Fourteenth-century Italy, and The War of Piedrac: Florence in the Shadow of the Black Death.
