A brief introduction to the Seneca Moral Book

This book is a Chinese translation of 124 letters written by the ancient Roman Stoic philosopher Seneca to his friend Lucilius. The letters are believed to have been written between 63-65 AD, shortly before Seneca's death. The content of the letter covers the author's views and discussions on philosophy, virtue, death, learning, fear, pleasure, wealth and many other issues as a Stoic philosopher. The content is quite extensive, reflecting many major ideas of Stoic philosophy, and playing an important role in promoting the inheritance and development of classical Western philosophy, especially Stoicism.

The Chinese translation is based on the English version of the book (MoralletterstoLucilius), which was translated by Latin scholar Dr. RichardMottGummere from 1917 to 1925.

About the author

LuciusAnnaeusSeneca (4 or 1 BC - 65 AD)

Roman politician, philosopher, tragedian, orator and one of the representatives of Stoic philosophy. Early in his life, he embraced Pythagorean mysticism and Eastern religious worship, and later converted to Stoicism. He served as imperial treasurer and Senator, then consul in charge of judicial affairs and tutor to the future emperor Nero. After Nero ascended the throne, he became one of Nero's principal advisers. After falling out of favor, he retired and devoted himself to writing, but he was still charged with attempting to murder Nero and sentenced to death.

Seneca wrote extensively in his life, touching on all practical fields that could be studied. His thought had an indelible influence on later generations. His ethics played a significant role in the formation of Christian thought, and his words were heavily absorbed by biblical writers, giving him the title of Christian Godfather. Since the Renaissance, his wonderful words have been widely used in Europe.
