Highsmith's Diary and Notes

Patricia Highsmith is a particularly unique name in American literature. Her first novel was remade by Hitchcock into the film of the same name "Strangers on the Train", and the semi-autobiographical novel "Carol" published under a pseudonym is a landmark work in the history of American gay literature, and the "Genius Ripley", which deeply explores the dark side of readers' hearts and has several film versions, is beyond the category of genre fiction. Join the ranks of great literature.

Highsmith left behind more than 8,000 pages of diaries and notes, carefully edited by her editor over decades and accompanied by never-before-seen private photographs and archival documents. Pat has essentially kept track of her life in two narratives: her diary, which details her intense and sometimes painful personal experiences, and her notes, which help her process those experiences rationally and craft her writing. The book is chronologically divided into five periods, based on where Pat lived, from her early years in the United States, through her middle age as she moved around Europe, to her final years in Switzerland. The entries in the diary and the notes are so interwoven that reading them separately is not a problem, but reading them together is necessary to get a full picture of her -- in Pat's own words -- if an author spends her life hiding the parts of her story that she draws from her own experiences, it is easier for her novels to distance us from the author. Instead of leading us closer to her.

The world is more familiar with Highsmith's reclusive image of retreating from Europe in her later years, but these writings also reveal the cheerful, optimistic and ambitious side of her youth. Both as a person and as a writer, Pat is fascinating and complex, and in these words, she leaves behind her own passionate and wonderful life, telling readers how a strong and independent woman has shed her origins, fought against social prejudices, and used writing to realize her dreams step by step. In addition to Pat's own life and creation, readers also get a glimpse of the European and American cultural scene at that time - through the perspective of Pat as an "outsider", they have never had a unique experience.

This is not an autobiographical work, the process of writing an autobiography is necessarily looking back in the past, often carefully edited, from a specific perspective, and these diaries and notes record a period of ongoing life, like two mirrors, reflecting her life and work from different angles. Let the reader see - in the author's own words - how Patricia Highsmith became Patricia Highsmith.

About the author

Patricia Highsmith was born in 1921 in Fort Worth, Texas, and moved to New York with her parents at the age of six, where she attended Julia Richmond High School and Barnard College for Girls. Her first novel, Strangers on a Train, was made into a film by Alfred Hitchcock in 1951. The Genius of Ripley, published in 1955, established his supreme position in genre literature.

Patricia Highsmith, a writer of crime novels and short stories, has lived extensively in Europe, where she is far more popular than in the United States. In recent years, as critics have dug deeper into her work, her reputation has grown even higher in death than in life. A few years ago, Time magazine ranked Patricia Highsmith among the 50 greatest crime writers of all Time.

Highsmith is good at writing characters' abnormal psychological states, step by step, subtle and complex, the atmosphere is often like a dark cloud, and the definition of good and evil is often different from other crime novels. Her body of work is small, but her unique style, represented by the "Ripley Series", has been highly praised by many pure literary masters, such as Graham Greene, Julian Simmons and Joyce Carlo Oates. At the same time, these novels with its strong sense of picture and shock to attract many film practitioners, the great director Minghella, Wenders and film stars Alain Delon, Markovic, Matt Damon, Jude Law are her loyal fans, they worked together to create several "Ripley film" versions, have become popular film history classics.
