Port City and Unlock the World content introduction
A fascinating history of globalization in the steam age, illustrating the rise and fall of the world's major port cities before and after steam power. From New Orleans to Montreal, from Mumbai to Singapore, from Kolkata to Shanghai, the author offers unique insights into the formation of the globalized modern world through the subtle interpretation of historical cases. Steam power transformed the world by reshaping cities and oceans, vastly improving the ease of land and water transportation, creating complex, resource-consuming world industrial systems, and revolutionizing the way people work and produce, with the result that Europe and the United States expanded across the globe on an unprecedented scale and shaped the world we live in today.
