The Wasteland 【 Content Introduction 】
In this book, Victoria Di Palma takes an "anti-picturesque" approach, describing the landscape of the wilderness that has traditionally been feared and scorned. She argues that the confluence of beliefs, technologies, institutions and individuals in 18th-century England led to a cultural attitude of "disgust" that still shapes the way we evaluate landscapes today.
The book contains a large number of illustrations dating back to the 17th century, covering diverse fields such as landscape studies, the history of art and architecture, geography, history, and the history of science and technology. Through these materials, the author presents us with the concept of marshes, mountains, and forests as "hostile territory," which she argues are grouped together not by any basic physical characteristics, but by the disgust reactions they inspire.

Victoria Di Palma is an associate professor of architectural history and theory at the University of Southern California School of Architecture. He has taught in the Department of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University, the Department of Art History at Rice University, and taught postgraduate courses in architectural history and theory at the Architectural Union School in London. His research focuses on modern European architectural history and related theories, early modern land use, and contemporary landscape theory and design. His books include The Wasteland: A Cultural History and The Intimate Metropolis: Urban Themes in the Modern City.
