The Angel at My Desk

The trilogy covers the author's childhood and teenage years until 1963, when he returned to New Zealand after seven years in Europe. With a natural narrative tone, the author recounts his entire life of growing up and writing, including his misdiagnosis as schizophrenic. Her unique gift is the frankness and depth with which she reveals her vulnerability, and the ease with which she writes about pain, humiliation and success.

In the first book, To the Real Island, the author recounts her life before high school, "mixing facts, truths, and memories of the truth." She was a plain-looking, freckle-faced little girl with red hair and no one noticed her. In her works, her mother has a good memory and is talkative, and her brother suffers from epilepsy, which has a great influence on the family atmosphere. In order to attract the attention of her classmates, she stole her father's money to buy gum and was found out by the teacher and made to stand.

The second, An Angel at My Desk, tells the story of her time at Dunedin Teachers College and her subsequent breakdown and placement in a mental hospital. She was lonely in college, withdrawing more and more into her own literary world. At the end of a year of probationary teaching, she walked out of the room during a visit by the school inspector and disappeared.

After a suicide attempt, she was sent to a mental hospital. She had never thought that such a world existed. She described it as an intense course of insanity terror. She underwent more than two hundred electroshock treatments and was scheduled for a leukotomy, which was cancelled only after her collection of stories won a prestigious award. Before being discharged from the hospital, he was allowed to live and write in the cabin of the famous writer Sargison. After her essays and poems were accepted for publication, she received funding to travel abroad.

The third book, The Messenger in the City of Mirrors, tells the story of her writing experiences while living in England and Spain. The City of Mirrors is what sustains her and saves the world. She continued to write, only to learn that the diagnosis of schizophrenia she had been carrying was a misdiagnosis. With some life experience and wise psychotherapy, she finally wrote about her experiences living in a mental hospital. Because of the death of his father, he finally decided to return to New Zealand after seven years.
