在两宋之际的战乱动荡中，政治凌驾于经济、文化之上，专制皇权膨胀为绝对独裁，一些倾向保守的知识分子转向儒学，以道德重建为救亡图存之道，这种保守主义思想终于被树立为国家正统，这就是影响后世中国近千年之久的“理学”。然而，对于思想文化的发展来说，这是一场得不偿失的胜利。11世纪曾经纵横恣肆、辉煌一时、充满外向活力的中国知识分子和他们所创造的思想，在正统的笼罩下趋向内在、保守、封闭、自省，失去创新的动力。
作者简介
作者：刘子健（JamesT.C.Liu，1919—1993），早年求学于清华大学、燕京大学，后赴美国匹兹堡大学历史系攻读博士学位。先后在匹兹堡大学、斯坦福大学、普林斯顿大学任教。研究范围遍及宋代政治、文化和社会生活的方方面面。著述有《两宋史研究汇编》《欧阳修：十一世纪的新儒家》《宋代中国的改革：王安石及其新政》等。其中，《中国转向内在》一书在美国汉学界影响甚巨。
译者：赵冬梅北京大学历史系教授、博士研究生导师，曾任德国维尔茨堡大学汉学系、法国巴黎社会科学高等研究院客座教授。致力于宋代制度、政治文化和历史人物传记的研究、写作和传播，著有《法度与人心：帝制时代人与制度的互动》《人间烟火：掩埋在历史里的日常与人生》《大宋之变：1063—1086》《文武之间：北宋武选官研究》等。
China Turns Inward. Brief introduction
In the war and turmoil of the two Song Dynasties, politics was above economy and culture, and autocratic imperial power expanded into absolute dictatorship. Some intellectuals with conservative tendencies turned to Confucianism and took moral reconstruction as the way to save the nation and survive. This conservative thought was finally established as the national orthodoxy, which was the Neo-Confucianism that influenced later China for nearly one thousand years. However, it was a pyrrhic victory for the development of ideology and culture. Under the shadow of orthodoxy, Chinese intellectuals and the ideas they created tended to be inward, conservative, closed and introspective, losing the impetus for innovation.
About the author
The author: Liu Zijian (JamesT. C.iu, 1919-1993), studied in Tsinghua University and Yenching University in the early years, and then went to the University of Pittsburgh to pursue a doctorate in history. He taught at the University of Pittsburgh, Stanford University, and Princeton University. The scope of research covers all aspects of political, cultural and social life in the Song Dynasty. He is the author of a Compilation of Studies on the History of the Two Song Dynasties, Ouyang Xiu: The New Confucianism in the Eleventh Century, and Reform in Song China: Wang Anshi and His New Policies. Among them, the book "China Turns Inward" has a great influence on the American sinology.
Zhao Dongmei, Professor of History and doctoral supervisor of Peking University, was a visiting professor of the Department of Sinology of the University of Wurzburg in Germany and the Institute of Advanced Social Sciences in Paris, France. He is committed to the study, writing and dissemination of the Song Dynasty system, political culture and biographies of historical figures, including Law and Human Heart: Interaction between people and Institutions in the Imperial Era, Human Fireworks: Daily Life and Life buried in History, Changes in the Great Song Dynasty: 1063-1086, and Between Civil and Military: A Study of Elected Officials in the Northern Song Dynasty.
