德国著名文学评论家、作家，美国圣路易斯华盛顿大学客座教授，曾在《法兰克福汇报》《世界日报》《焦点》杂志等媒体担任文学编辑，曾获得特奥多尔·沃尔夫新闻奖，著有《剃掉胡子的马克思》《现代性之后：关于当代德国文学的论文》《马塞尔·赖希-拉尼茨基：生活的故事》等书。

As soon as Hitler became Chancellor of Germany, he began to persecute communists and social Democrats, especially the writers and artists active in the political and cultural scene of Germany, who were either imprisoned, shot, or forced to flee the country within a short month of Nazi rule. With a close perspective and a detailed account of the persections and escapes that took place every day from January 28 to March 15, 1933, the book describes the experiences of many of the cultural giants of the Weimar era, such as Thomas Mann, Elser Lasker-Schule, Brecht, Alfred Debryn, Hooch, Georges Groz, and Henrich Mann. This short month became the winter of German literature, but also the prelude to the cold night of the world.
