A brief introduction to the contents of the Moral Book

The Moral Treatise is considered the most important of Seneca's works. In one hundred and twenty-four letters to his disciple Lucilio, Seneca discussed the meaning of words such as friendship, dignity, death, and freedom, quoted the sayings of the wise men, and pondered the question of how to practice virtue.

For Seneca, happiness has nothing to do with the acquisition of material wealth, social status, and the exercise of power, and happiness as the ultimate good, only lies in the moral good. It is a frugality that withstands all trials, and it is also a self-education and a spiritual discipline, which is the only way to find for oneself some stability in the world, some permanence based on the principle of loyalty, which is always one with oneself.

The book is based on a full translation of the 2007 Portuguese edition of the Kubenji Foundation, with a foreword by Jose Antonio Segurado Campos.

About the author

LuciusAnnaeusSeneca (4 BC - 65 AD) was an ancient Roman philosopher, dramatist, poet, politician, and Stoic figure. Seneca had been a court adviser under the Roman emperor Caligula, exiled at the time of Claudius' accession, and recalled to become Nero's tutor. Seneca played an important role as an adviser to Emperor Nero, but was later driven to suicide. He left behind many philosophical works, such as "On Anger", "On Happy Life" or "On the Brevity of Life", especially his "Moral Treatise", which fully reveals his Stoic philosophy. His tragic works are one of the best examples of Latin tragedy, such as Medea and Oedipus, which nourished the French classical drama of the 17th century.
