Cruel Cinema is an anthology of film criticism by French film critic and theorist Andre Bazin, featuring 37 incisive reviews of six directors and their works:

Stroheim, the representative figure of the cursed film, has the dual identity of both director and actor. In order to fill the void of silent film, he uses a large number of movie routines to stimulate the deep character of the actor and show the cruel light of the individual.

The mysticism flowing from the tragic religious themes and the real emotion almost from the soul can be compared with the scene scheduling and scenery of Flemish painting, which together constitute the realism aesthetics of Dreyer.

Sturges' comedy is an ironic sociological investigation, and its humorous and funny plot hides a realistic script, which satirizes and exposes the traditional comedy and the social myth it tells.

Both sadistic and compassionate. Using cruel dialectics, Bunuel weaves surrealist dreams, exploring the extreme cruelty of the human condition and transforming it into the noble kindness and eternal simplicity of human beings.

Hitchcock was a master of suspense, an expert at making detective films, and one of the most skilled directors in film history, and through his subtle cinematic technique he achieved "a kind of terrible irony, a cruelty that is more real than it seems at first sight."

Akira Kurosawa absorbs the nutrition of Western film aesthetics while preserving his own civilized style. In his films, simple plots are enough to depict the truth of human nature, and realism and universal values are perfectly integrated.

Andre Bazin (1918-1958) was a famous French film critic, theorist and one of the founders of Cahiers du cinema. His film ideas had a great influence on the entire French film critical community, especially on the New Wave generation of directors such as Francois Truffaut, Eric Rohmer, Jean-Luc Godard, Claude Chabrol and Jacques Rivette. He is best known for the four-volume What Is a Movie? (Qu 'est -ce que le cinema?) .
