"Pumpkin Mountain" is located on the border between Israel and Lebanon, in the 1990s, Pumpkin Mountain was considered a military security zone by the Israeli army, although it is only as big as a basketball court, but it carried the lives of a group of young Israeli soldiers. The story begins with the perspective of "Soldier Avi", narrating a series of events that have occurred on Pumpkin Mountain since 1994: Pumpkin Mountain incident, Falcon incident, crash incident. Again and again, young soldiers are "thrown" into absurd realities, unable to find the meaning of war, let alone see who they are.
Four years later, Friedman was sent to Pumpkin Mountain as a soldier. There, he is Avi - on similar military missions, meeting veterans of Avi's time, standing at Avi's old guard post, facing Avi's old death. When the war ended and the safe zone ceased to exist, Friedman returned to Lebanon some years later as a Canadian tourist, reflecting on the war, the country, life and humanity, trying to find an outlet for understanding the war and documenting the young people who should be remembered.
The stories on Pumpkin Mountain help us understand the true origins of today's unrest in the Middle East, but at the same time, aside from the grand themes of home and country, Friedman helps readers and soldiers on Pumpkin Mountain confront the absurdity of survival and the fragility of life.
