At the age of 23, Paul Farmer found his purpose in life: to bring modern medicine to those who need it most.
During medical school, Farmer spent half of his time practicing medicine in Haiti, earning a PhD in medicine and a PhD in anthropology from Harvard University with honors.
After graduation, he spent four months of the year teaching and seeing doctors in Boston, and the rest of the year shuttling around the world:
He built a modern clinic in one of the poorest parts of Haiti to provide medical care to people living in extreme poverty. He cared for tuberculosis and malaria patients in Peru; He promoted public health in Cuba; He convinced the World Health Organization and the World Bank to provide a lot of money to stop an outbreak of tuberculosis in Siberian prisons... He traveled around the world, relentlessly advocating for health care for the poor.
Dr. Farmer's actions are a true example of the Haitian proverb "over the hill, there is another mountain" - when you deal with one problem, another problem appears. All you have to do is keep moving, keep moving.
