"Modern Architecture" content introduction
"The history of modern architecture is a history of reform, of 'avant-garde' trends, not a history of trying to solve the whole problem of architectural production neutrally and without ideology."
Alan Cohon, a renowned architectural critic and emeritus professor of architecture at Princeton University, focuses on the core themes of culture and industry, aesthetics and utility, and presents a concise and accurate picture of the development of modern architecture through the review of the modern architectural movement in Europe and the United States in the first half of the 20th century and its gains and losses.
Starting from the important moment of the conflict between architecture and the external conditions of modernity, Professor Cohun does not confine himself to analyzing specific architectural works, but tries to clarify the evolution of key ideas such as functionalism, organism, expressionism and futurism in various countries, and reveals the main contradictions that run through the modern architectural movement. At the same time, the practice of modern architects -- Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Kahn, etc., is placed in their own social and cultural ideological background to make a new interpretation.
