A brief introduction to the Faraway Father
Nearly 6 million Americans - roughly one in 10 people over the age of 65 - have Alzheimer's disease or related dementias, and that number is expected to more than double by 2050. What's it like to live with an increasing prevalence of this disease? What if the closest family member gets the disease?
"Distant Father" is a moving memoir. After being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, the agronomist father, who had been called a "master" because of his high IQ, was indignant and insisted that this was a normal physiological phenomenon after entering old age, but Dr. Sandeep knew that he and his family had begun to enter a "war." Father and mother with Parkinson's disease - he with his mental illness, she with her neurological disease - continue to live without the full presence of their children. As the disease progressed, he became moody and violent, making those around him cry and helpless. After grieving the death of his mother, his father, once proud and desperate for recognition, became a lonely, weak and helpless old man. Sandeep and his siblings, as well as the carers who regard their father as their own family, accompanied their father through the final journey of life in their own ways.
This book Chronicles the experience of Dr. Sandeep and his family, including the mistakes they made, the explorations they tried, and the quarrels, reconciliations, compromises, and help they made. At the same time, the book also raises the practical issues of community and family care for Alzheimer's disease, and gives several practical recommendations.
About the author
Sandeep Joha, M.D., PhD, physics, attending cardiologist at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, associate professor at Hofstra Northway School of Medicine, specializes in heart failure, and is a columnist for The New York Times. He received a Special Honor Award from the South Asia Journalists Association for outstanding medical humanities writing. Articles have appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine, and other media and professional journals, and his published books include The Intern: A Physician's Beginnings and Becoming a Physician: The Disillusionment of an American Physician.
