Brief introduction of the Divine Comedy

DanteAlighieri (1265-1321), the greatest Italian poet, enjoys the same reputation as Homer and Shakespeare in the history of Western literature. His masterpiece "Divine Comedy", which took more than ten years to complete, represents the highest achievement of medieval literature. The year 2011 marks the 700th anniversary of Dante's death.

The Divine Comedy adopts the form of fantasy literature popular in the Middle Ages, describing a story of imaginary travel to the three realms of hell, purgatory and heaven. There are three volumes of the poem, namely "Hell", "Purgatory" and "Heaven", each volume of 33, plus the preface a total of 100. The poet describes how he lost his way in a dark forest in the early hours of Easter in the year 130, and was stopped by leopards, lions, and wolves, symbols of lust, power, and greed. At this critical moment, the ancient Roman poet Virgil appears, and he is asked to come to the aid of the woman who Dante loved in his youth, Bidelice. Virgil guides Dante through hell, where sinful souls are punished, through Purgatory, where penitent souls are held, and finally through the nine heavens that make up heaven, guided by Pydritze, he finally reaches God. At this point Dante realizes that his thoughts are in harmony with the thoughts of God, and the whole poem comes to an abrupt end. When Dante travels through hell and purgatory, many of the souls he encounters are famous figures in history or at that time, and the lines of the psalm are full of allegorical meanings, as well as strong theological and religious colors.

The translation of "Divine Comedy" by Mr. Zhu Wei is recognized as a classic poetic translation. It has been published in many editions before and has been well received by readers. Now it is included in the new edition of "Translated Illustrations Rare World Literary Masterpieces" series. The famous 19th century French printmaker Dore's illustrations for the Divine Comedy are the most popular, and we have used Dore's illustrations in previous editions, but our "Illustration Collection" specifically uses the illustrations of the famous Dadaist master and German-American painter GeorgeGrosz (1893-1959). Grosz was invited to create more than 30 illustrations for the 1932 edition of The Divine Comedy by the Modern Library of America, and the entire collection of our "Illustrated Rare Book" is printed in spot color, in order to provide readers with a fresh modernist perspective on understanding and appreciating classical literary classics. This book creatively uses bamboo board and natural linen to make the book case, the book is printed in two colors, the text is beautiful, the perfect combination, rich appreciation and collection value.

GeorgeGrosz (1893-1959) was a German American painter and master of Dadaism. His works, especially his satirical paintings, made a sharp and profound criticism of the corruption of society at the time, and were therefore called "the number one cultural Bolshevik" by the Nazis. ... In the symbolic work Germany, A Winter's Fairy Tale (1919) and the series of paintings You See This Man, the contemporary society is depicted. During this period, he followed the Dada trend of art, which he described as "the organized use of madness to express contempt for a bankrupt world." During World War II, he expressed his pessimism in powerful paintings such as The Survivor (1944). (Encyclopedia Britannica)
