Introduction to the content of Overwork

The authors explored the IT departments of Fortune 500 companies and found that long working hours hurt both the health of employees and the overall productivity of the company.

Today in the 21st century, overwork is everywhere, all the time. Globalization and the new technological revolution have brought a sense of crisis to all walks of life, and the work model of "too much work and too tight time" is continuing to hurt employees and enterprises. Those who survived the layoffs were forced to take on the jobs of those who were laid off, and the workload skyrocketed. The company adheres to the principle of "doing more with less", and employees are forced to work overtime and run hard.

With the outbreak, working from home has removed the dividing line between home and work, telecommuting has led to longer working hours, and employees often feel a pressure to be on call. Even with the end of the pandemic, most companies are still embracing work models that control all of their employees' personal time, and "24-hour availability" is the new normal.

In fact, the solution to "overwork" is not to establish a "hard work" corporate culture, let alone encourage employees to adjust their so-called "work-life balance", but to work with employees to adopt new ways of working to improve work efficiency. Based on field research, this book provides actionable solutions for both companies and employees.

Won the American Sociological Association's Max Weber Award, a Silver Axiom Business Book Award, and was named one of the top 10 books on the "future of work" by BusinessInsider.

Backed by a wealth of research data, and supported by compelling and compelling real cases, this study analyzes how chronic stress caused by high-load work patterns leads to burnout, employee turnover, and lower performance levels, and offers practical strategies for changing this unhealthy work environment.
