Introduction to the content of "After the Hegemony"
This book is a comprehensive study of the phenomenon of cooperation among advanced capitalist countries. Can cooperation be sustained without the dominance of a single country, as the United States did after World War II? To answer this pressing question, Robert Keohan analyzes the institutions, or "international mechanisms," that foster cooperation in the world's political economy and describes how those mechanisms evolved as U.S. hegemony was weakened. He rejects the idea that the decline of hegemony makes cooperation impossible, viewing international institutions as tools to promote decentralized cooperation among self-interested actors, rather than as a weak alternative to world government.
About the author
Robert Keohan is a professor of international affairs at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, a fellow of the American Academy of Sciences and a past president of the American Political Association, and a former professor at Stanford, Berlands, Harvard, and Duke Universities. He is the author of Research Design in the Social Sciences (with Gary King and Sydney Wiba) and Power and Interdependence (with Joseph Nye).
