A brief introduction to East of Eden
All my previous work was practice for this book. -- John Steinbeck
East of Eden is the pinnacle of Steinbeck's literary life and an enduring classic bestseller in the United States. Since its publication, it has been read by tens of millions of readers and occupies an important position in the history of American culture. This edition includes for the first time the author's writing notes of 20,000 words.
The novel is set in the Salinas Valley of California, and tells the story of two families from the Civil War to World War I for half a century with the technique of blending symbolism and realism. Here Steinbeck portrays his most fascinating characters and explores his most enduring themes: the mystery of identity, the blindness of love, and the murderous consequences of its absence.
