Money, Curiosities and Creation

This book is a history of early modern (17th and 18th century) European science, focusing on the scientific and commercial innovations of Dutch naturalists and anatomists. Since the scientific Revolution in the 17th century, commercial interests have had a strong influence on science. In this book, the author introduces the naturalists, doctors, and antiquarians of the time in Amsterdam, London, St. Petersburg, and Paris who, in order to promote the trade in scientific products, developed modern taxonomy, invented color printing and taxidermy techniques, and engaged in philosophical debates from human anatomy to Newtonian optics. They produce and sell curiosities, anatomical prints, specimens, and natural history atlases to customers around the world.

In a context where global trade has greatly influenced cultural production, the author explores the relationship between the commodification of knowledge, visual representations (specimens, picture books), and the field of Dutch science in the early modern period. In the author's opinion, commercial networks play an important role in the production and dissemination of scientific knowledge. Moreover, modern science did not come from isolated luminaries, but from scientific journals, prints, and letters that accelerated the exchange of ideas.
