A brief introduction to Irony and the Discourse of Modernity
This book is a collection of annual faculty lectures given by the author at the University of Washington in November 1986, with the aim of systematically responding to the "meta-narrative" of Enlightenment dialectics in the Philosophical Discourse of Modernity by the contemporary German thinker Habermas. By exploring the things related to irony, the author makes an outline of the history of western ideas and interprets irony from a simple rhetorical device to a philosophical configuration. In the historical context, the author demarcates irony as the constant "self-reference" of the present, leading to a series of "ironic discourses of modernity" from the romantic to the postmodern - "The ironist knows that there is no truth, and must now play the role of philosophy completely differently."
