The author of this book, Matsuhara Iworo, in order to experience the most real poor life in the middle of the Meiji period in Japan, disguised as a poor person into the slum, with a spiritual attitude, in the world's darkest struggle to survive more than 500 days, wrote in this cave of hunger and cold heard, experienced all kinds of poor life trivia. Through detailed sketches of the lives of the poor - the mix of the woodmoney inn, the details of the auction house, the bustle of the morning market, the food of the charioteers, the number of daily wage laborers - the living conditions, eating habits, means of livelihood, and social life of the lower classes are depicted. It also shows the author's unique observation of Tokyo in that period and his deep sympathy for the suffering social life of the lower classes at that time.

Iworo Matsuhara (1866-1935) was a Japanese novelist and social journalist during the Meiji period. After becoming a journalist, he thoroughly observed and recorded the life of the lower class in Tokyo, showing another side of the city from the perspective of the poor.
