Through the Prism of Russia

Joseph Frank's series of biographies of Dostoyevsky is now recognized as a major achievement of biographies in the twentieth century, perhaps the best of all biographies of Dostoyevsky written in various languages.

In the long process of trying to write this biography, Frank also wrote articles, book reviews, and essays based on his keen insight into Western thought, how it transforms and takes on new meaning and connotations when reflected through the Russian prism. Over the years, this interplay between Russia and the West has fascinated Frank and provided the focus for these papers.

This book brings together twenty essays on the culture that gave birth to Dostoyevsky's great novels and on the critical theories of the Russian formalists of the early twentieth century, whose ideas still shape our view of Russian and world literature. The content of this book includes an evaluation of the works of Jacobson and Bakhtin, as well as of some works related to the development of Russian formalist critical theory and thought. The core of the book is a collection of essays about Dostoyevsky, the circumstances in which he lived and wrote, and his influence on world literature. These include Frank's essay on the new standard that Ralph Ellison benefited from Dostoyevsky and a critical look at Freud's world-famous treatise on the Russian master.

Taken together, these essays demonstrate a certain powerful critical intelligence of our time, dealing with issues that arose out of Frank's study of Dostoevsky, but which are discussed in ways that greatly transcend the novelist's own time and place.
