Content introduction

This book is a theoretical book reflecting on the current situation of economics and exploring the new agenda of future economics.

How does economics need to change to keep pace with the 21st century digital economy? Digital technologies, big data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence are revolutionizing economics' research tools and the phenomena it seeks to measure, understand, and shape. In this book, the author explores the great problems and opportunities facing economics today. Economics needs to adapt to these dizzying changes and help policymakers navigate crises such as recovering from pandemics, combating inequality, and responding to slowing growth and the climate emergency.

The authors point out that mainstream economics still assumes that people are "cogs" - self-interested, calculating, independent agents interacting in a given environment - but the digital economy is more like "monsters" - unfettered, snowballing, and socially influenced unknowns. In economics, things never work out the way one expects them to, otherwise the world would be a predictable, manageable place.

In this book, the authors ask: Do we need new ways to measure growth and progress? Can economics remain objective? After all, it affects the things it analyzes. This book is full of unique insights and provides a roadmap for how economics can better adapt to changes in social factors, including digital technologies, and play a hugely positive role in the digital economy.
