This is a Liang Sicheng you are not familiar with. From 1931 to 1948, he responded to the modern architectural trend that shook the world. Through the research and writing of architectural history, he and his colleagues built the system of "Chinese architecture" and actively thought about the possibility of the transformation of this system to modern Chinese architecture. From 1949 to 1959, he was deeply involved in the political movement of New China. In order to keep up with the situation, he frequently engaged in self-denial and transformation, and sometimes directed criticism at his peers. His thought process is full of sharp twists, breaks and switches, and finally completely lost. The system of "Chinese architecture" he built also fell apart under the impact of arbitrary political currents.
This book traces Liang Sicheng's spiritual journey with a large number of new historical materials, and explores the complex relationship between the development of modern and contemporary Chinese architecture, regime change and political movements. That history is far from over: the arbitrary architecture resulting from the arbitrary politics still dominates the spatial landscape of China today.
