Colm Tobin's early masterpiece, shortlisted for the Booker Prize
Three generations with different beliefs and feelings
Examine the past in the shallows of history
In Ireland in the early 1990s, due to the terminal illness of her gay brother Declan, Helen has to reunite with her estranged mother Lily at her grandmother DORA's old house by the sea to take care of the terminally ill Declan. Staying with them were Declan's friends Paul and Larry.
Helen and Lily have been estranged for a long time, and Lily has problems with DORA. In the process of facing Declan's illness, the three generations with different beliefs and feelings are forced to examine their past in this historical shoal, listen to each other's hearts in the collision and conflict, and gradually reach an understanding through the retrospection of the past.
Tobin uses soothing, beautiful prose to explore the nature of love and the complex emotions of a conflicted family in a deeply resonant way: How do you face your family and heal your deepest wounds?
