The Sea, the Birds and the Scholars
The poet said that without birds and their offspring, the sea would be "the landscape of death."
This book is a collection of two decades of Helen Vendler's essays, book reviews, and occasional essays (including the 2004 Jefferson Lecture). Wendler has studied 19th - and 20th-century British, Irish, and American poets and their works, including Stevens, Heaney, Ashbery, and Graham, whom she has long focused on, as well as Hughes, Ginsberg, Lowell, Bishop, Krampitt, and Merrill. In addition, Wendler seeks to trace the poetic tradition, tracing the influence of Keats, Yeats, Whitman, Eliot, and others in the work of today's poets. Wendler tries to show what Stevens called the poetical ecology: "Poetry is a scholar's art."

American poetry critic and professor at Harvard University. Her works on poets and poetry are numerous, ranging from Shakespeare and Dickinson to Heaney and Bishop.
